The $3 million Tatts Cox Plate at Moonee Valley Racecourse in Melbourne on October 22 is shaping
up to be the focal point of this year's internationally-acclaimed Spring Racing Carnival and one of the
season's must-attend events.
It has evolved to become an invitational series attracting some of the world's best middle distance
So what makes a great Cox Plate and why should Kiwi's cross the ditch to experience it live?
Some will say it's the quality of winner; others the depth of class, the authority of win, the competitive
nature of the finish or the circumstances in which the race was run.
Or maybe, it's the nature of the course -- a natural amphitheatre -- which amplifies the public's
response to all of these factors.
The Cox Plate is known as "the race where legends are made" and has consistently served up some of
the best racing in Australasia.
The race boasts an impressive roll call of champions including Kingston Town, Super Impose,
Octagonal, Might and Power, Sunline, Makybe Diva, So You Think and the immortal Phar Lap.
This year the Moonee Valley Racing Club celebrates the 25th anniversary of the epic battle that
was universally acclaimed as the "Race of the Century" between the two New Zealand champions
Bonecrusher and Our Waverley Star.
The 1986 W.S Cox Plate had all the hallmarks of a heavyweight title fight and was dubbed "the
showdown for the crown".
It was a race where the hype in the lead-up was matched, and even surpassed, as the two chestnuts
slugged it out for victory in a Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier style title bout.
Thirteen entries were at the starting gates for a tilt at the W.S. Cox Plate that year but it fast became
a two horse contest as Bonecrusher and Our Waverley Star sprinted clear of the pack with just 800m
"Here come the New Zealanders . . . have they gone too early...?" asked race caller Bill Collins.
The crowd was whipped into frenzy. Throats were left raw. And the race call, sustained at a searing
pace, truly honoured the spectacle that unfolded, and has since become part of racing folklore.
Bonecrusher won by a neck - never to be forgotten. Our Waverley Star also became a household name.
The powerful chestnuts were the gladiators and Moonee Valley became the Colosseum. Such is the
magic and allure of the W.S. Cox Plate.
Today the Tatts Cox Plate is worth an impressive $3,050,000, making it the third richest race in
Australia behind the Melbourne Cup and the Golden Slipper.
It offers racing fans, event goers and sporting enthusiasts the opportunity to experience the very best
of Spring Racing Carnival action -- champion horses, jockeys and trainers, an international flavour,
entertainment, fashion, lifestyle, married with great food and wine.
Moonee Valley is considered to be Australia's most appealing spectator racecourse and gets spectators
close to all the racing action to experience the thrill and exhilaration of this world class event.
The Cox Plate celebrations start off track in the week leading into the race with a strong social
calendar of events including Breakfast with the Best on Tuesday 18 October, the Tatts Cox Plate
Ladies' Fashion Lunch on Friday 21 October and the 2040 Cox Plate lunch held at the Atlantic Wharf.
Racegoers will get to soak up the Carnival atmosphere from a huge array of dining and entertainment
options including exclusive dining boxes, suites, marquees, and restaurants.
